Annual Inter-house Competitions

The fever of our college sports competition was at its peak. Everyday we had a tournament or the other which turned into a pitched battle later. Our house was doing very well. Robin and I dominated in cricket and won the trophy for our house. I also won in badminton winning one more prize for my house.

Now it was the turn for the painting competition. Paintings from all houses were displayed in the exhibition hall. I was interested in Charu’s paintings only. She was standing next to her paintings.

“Hey... how is your painting doing?” I asked.

“I don’t know, it will be decided by the jury,” she said.

“I hope you win. I don’t know much about paintings but yours looks excellent,” I said.

“I like your attitude, you are honest about your opinions,” she said.

“But your house can win too as their entries are excellent,” she said.

It was now time for the announcement of results. All of us gathered anxiously at the hall where the chief guest was to announce and give away the prizes.

“We got some really excellent paintings from our talented students from each house this time and our esteemed chief guest will soon announce the names of the winners,” the principal said.

At once Charu held my hand holding her painting brush in the other hand. I looked down at my hand; it was looking very good with that delicate, soft and fair hand around it. I didn’t look at Charu just in case she would sense and leave my hand.

The Chief Guest came on the dais holding the winner’s name which was written on a colorful envelop. Charu’s grip became more and more intense with every passing moment. Her nails were digging into my skin, it was painful but pleasurable too.

I looked at Charu’s other hand; the brush was now kissing her cheeks and partially painted it green.

“And the winner is… Charulata Chaudhry, 3rd year Nanak House,” chief guest announced.

“She was motionless for a moment and then suddenly her grip slackened and my breath came down. She looked at me. In order to make her realize the condition I jumped up and down several times saying “Charu you are the winner! You are the winner! Congrats!”

My house mates were staring me including Robin and Rahul. At once I came back to normal.

“Second prize goes to Nandini Shaha, Kabir house.”

“Third Prize goes to Rajni Pathak, Nanak house.”

The Principal again took the mike and requested this trio to come up to the stage one by one to take their prizes.

“Go... You are first,” I nudged her.

She moved towards the dais and at once I held her hand, “Wait, don’t go like this,” I said and wiped the green paint off her cheeks...

She held her trophy, looked at her house and then looked at me for a few seconds as if her eyes were trying to say something to me.

She came back to me holding her trophy.

“I never imagined I would win this trophy,” she said. “Even now I can’t believe it,” she added.
